A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
This medication is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.
Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Response and Content Elimination
Based on the social media company, the service has removed problematic content and banned related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with numerous of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.
Within minutes of entering one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Information and Pricing
Inside these groups, messages display dark colored parcels with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should last, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Warnings
“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A representative from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
